Sports book meets real-life thriller in this sensational autobiography of Zimbabwe’s first-ever black cricketer. Blood, Sweat And Treason tells the story of Olonga's childhood against a backdrop of revolution, independence and a country that gradually spiralled out of control. He talks of his growing realisation that Mugabe headed up a murderous regime and how he sacrificed his comfortable position as an international sportsman to try to make a difference.
Now living in exile In England, branded a traitor in his homeland and stripped of his Zimbabwean citizenship, Olonga tells his extraordinary story in detail for the first time. Not just the famous protest but his early cricketing career in a rapidly changing Zimbabwe, the terrifying experience when he was car-jacked in Harare and his two-year dispute with his Zimbabwe team-mates after a row about racism in the dressing room.
He reveals all about his lesser known singing career – he has topped the charts in Zimbabwe and recorded an album in the UK – his love for drama, art and photography, his career with the famous Lashings World XI cricket team and the faith that has kept him strong through all this.
Longlisted for the William Hill Sports Book of the Year 2010.

Blood Sweat and Treason eBook Henry Olonga Reviews
Henry Olonga is an all African. He is a hero on and off the cricket pitch. Not only a very accomplished cricketer but a true Zimbabwean. Having lived through some of these events written in this book I can say Henry captures things on paper that not too many have written about. I hope my fellow Zimbabweans get a chance to read this book. As well as everyone across the world, cricket fan or not. This is a very moving story. I highly recommend it. Thank you Henry Olonga for writing this book.
I kinda liked this. Partly because I know many of the places and even people he mentions, but also because I like his christian honesty, innocence and humility. God gives him the courage to make his stand, and then sees him safely to a better future.
This book covers that sort of end of the limbo period in Zimbabwe where life was still OK but the cracks were really starting to appear. The end of the comfortable life for the whites, which they had taken for granted. He gives an objective account of the simmering racism, hostility, inequality and negativity- on both sides- without resentment or bitterness. He depicts this mostly fractured and alienated country, sharply divided between ethnicity and wealth. He sets the scene, with a doom-laden undercurrent, that we recognize as the precursor to the farm invasions. He leaves nothing out and the reader will be on his side all the way.
Very interesting read. Would intrigue the interest of those who follow cricket and the politics of Zimbabwe.I have always wondered what ever happened to him. It is a bit lop sided towards the writer, but an amazing story.
There is no self agrandisement, no self pity, just a young man's view of living life as you know it as a child and later realising propaganda is not always the truth and afterwards where life must be so different. Oh! to never be allowed back to the country you grew up in!
I have heard Henry's music and seen some of his paintings - he is very talented and I look forward to the next installment of his life!
Fantastic story. What a life! Inspiring stuff, and well written.
